FLOOD RISK REDUCTION IN HASSOCKS

Last Autumn has again seen a series of intense storms dumping a month’s-worth of rain in a day or two.  Central Hassocks has experienced some flooding due almost entirely to blocked road drains on the main road from Stonepound to the junction of Keymer Road with Grand Ave. Despite excessive rainfall the Herring stream did not over-top and we feel that our past work on natural flood management (NFM) together with members of HKD Transition and the Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust (OART) continues to mitigate flooding from the Herring stream and its tributaries.

CORONA VIRUS UPDATE (22/02/21) : Prime Minister sets out roadmap to cautiously ease lockdown restrictions

IN THE MEANTIME - YOU MUST STAY AT HOME

This is the single most important action we can all take to protect the NHS and save lives.

You must not leave your home unless necessary.

Stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household or bubble. Continue to do the basic things:

  • Wash hands - keep washing your hands regularly

  • Cover face - wear a face covering in enclosed spaces

  • Make space - stay at least 2 metres apart

  • If you have any coronavirus symptoms:

    • a high temperature

    • a new, continuous cough

    • a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste:

    • Get a test and stay at home

RAIL GROUP UPDATE

Timetable, Train Paths and eReader Update

Timetable changes from Sunday 13 December 2020.  As part of the national timetable change, some changes are being introduced to train services across the Govia Thameslink Railway network.

These changes have been shaped by the input of customers and stakeholders, the continued impact of coronavirus on the railway and to tailor services to the times when demand is greatest in order to provide a more reliable service.

The changes for Hassocks are a reduction of the Southern Hassocks to Victoria and Littlehampton trains from two an hour to one an hour between 09.02 and 12.02 northbound and 11.15 to 13.15 southbound weekdays; this does not affect Saturday and Sunday trains.  The removal of off-peak trains is to support peak train services in response to passenger demand.  The two an hour Thameslink trains are not affected.

Some stops have been added at Hassocks in peak hours on services between Brighton and London Victoria to provide more journey options and capacity.

It will be important to check your journey from Sunday 13 December.

In other news, eReaders on the wide access gates have been switched on at Hassocks from 30 November 2020, so customers can now use etickets / barcode tickets for travelling, as well as other smart options such as KeyGo.  eTickets can be used between any station that has a gateline fitted with barcode readers, as well as any community station that does not have a gateline.

As mentioned in our last update, in May 2020 major upgrade works were begun to Gatwick Airport station to meet the ever-increasing passenger demand there (see the information on the Rail Group page).  This affected train paths and a direct train service from Hassocks to Hove and West Coastway stations was introduced Monday to Saturday in place of the Hassocks to Brighton Southern services.  On Sunday all trains are from and to Brighton.

The Rail Group regularly feeds the concerns of Hassocks rail users to Govia Thameslink Railway through its stakeholder representatives who have good connections with the rail companies.

Passenger Benefit Fund (PBF)

Catherine Cassidy (Chair of HCO’s Rail Group) has been working with the rail managers since the PBF was announced in May 2019.  By way of background:

"The PBF was established following the disruption experienced by passengers during the implementation of the May 2018 timetable.  The fund, therefore has been allocated to passengers based on the tiers of the additional industry compensation scheme which were agreed following the disruption caused by the May 2018 timetable issues.

I am pleased to confirm that the passengers at stations in your area have been allocated the following amounts: Hassocks £80,000 " Patrick Ladbury, Stakeholder Manager.

In addition to the benefits mentioned below Catherine has already negotiated the tidying up of the two large planters on the London bound platform which was completed in Oct 2020. Catherine and members of HCO’s Green Group have also planted bulbs in the planters last November.

The following improvements will be undertaken at Hassocks station over the coming weeks:

  • Canopy over the ticket machine

  • Customer Information Screen

  • Seating

  • Cycle storage and shelter reconfiguration Platform 1

Rob Whitehead (Community Engagement Officer for Southern and GX) says:

” The improvements are part of the Passenger Benefit Fund.  The fund is supporting a range of work across the network including waiting shelters, refurbished toilets, more seats, information screens, automatic doors, more cycle parking, refurbished waiting rooms, station planters and LED lighting.

We’ve put together an area on our website to detail these projects station by station, you can download the list here - https://www.southernrailway.com/improvingyourstations.  We’re also reporting progress on these schemes on Twitter using the hashtag #ImprovingYourStations
